Mission Statement

Mission

Since June of 2022, The BrainScramble Magazine has aimed to give voice to young artists around the globe in a way that is genuine, unhindered, and that emphasizes complete autonomy.  We hope to amplify voices of dissent and those under-represented in the mainstream. Our bedrock values are autonomy and freedom of speech.

We publish issues every month on our website made of poetry, art, and writing, and also zines around every 3 issues compiling the content published online.

Editorial Policy

BrainScramble is a reader-supported, nonprofit, independent organization created in Toronto, Ontario in June of 2022. Our mission is to be a voice for young artists—especially POC ones—who face hurdles in publishing their work and art. All editorial decisions are made to advance these goals. We are a nonprofit supported by our readers. Our acceptance of donations from readers and grants from foundations does not drive our editorial judgment.  No one outside the organization is allowed to assign, review, or determine editorial content.

Donor Transparency

BrainScramble is committed to transparency in every aspect of the funding of our organization. Accepting financial support does not mean that we endorse donors or their products, services, or opinions. We accept gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals, organizations, and foundations to fund our general operations. Our news judgments are made independently—never based on or influenced by donors or their organizations. We do not give financial supporters the right to assign, review, or edit content.

Diversity Statement

At Brainscramble, diversity is celebrated and encouraged in all forms, especially when it comes to art and artists. As art is not only a tool of expression but also one of social change, we hope to highlight the work of POC artists and give them a channel where they can publish their work and elevate their voices without hindrance or difficulty. With bedrock values of autonomy and freedom of speech, we believe that artists should have the ability to express themselves with complete authenticity and control over their voices without fear of censorship or appropriation. Diversity and autonomy are not buzzwords but guiding principles that inform all our actions, publications, and communications. We are committed to creating a platform and community where diverse perspectives and identities are honored and treated with respect.
