I AM NOT A CAT

By Yukki Jiang

Medium: Mixed media on mini fridge

I often associate my Asian features as feline; upturned eyes, round face, and small nose. Hence, growing up in Western society, I used to find it insulting when people told me that I looked cat-like. This piece documents how Western beauty standards have impacted my perception of my own portrait. Therefore, I chose a fridge as my medium as it often affiliates itself with documenting childhood growth (childhood drawings, pictures, calendars, etc…). The phrase “I AM NOT A CAT” creates irony, clashing with the childhood photos and illustrations on the magnets which are inspired by Asian artworks and culture, because after all, I am, and will always be: a cat.
