Breathe

Artwork by Ben Henderson

Through my collage, I am expanding upon notions of solitude and presence, yet also questioning who is able to have these moments of relaxation. Without movement it is hard to understand the stillness of being totally present. I achieved movement through varying lines, patterns and textures which work to highlight an overall placidity where these elements are not found. Sharp edged cutouts contrast the smoothness of the painted body. The clothing fabric I used is lived-in, there are stains and strings emphasizing that marginalized groups do not afford moments like such in everyday life as much as privileged groups.
